Aaron Checkwood is an acclaimed photographer, artist, and journalist who is based in San Clemente, California. The former photo editor of the award-winning TransWorld SURF magazine, a position he held for five years, he also worked as a principal photographer for the magazine and traveled around the world to locations such as Mexico, Indonesia, Australia, Brazil, South Africa, Europe, and the Caribbean shooting amazing action and lifestyle photos with some of the greatest athletes of this generation.
In 2012, Aaron created and published the acclaimed My Oceanside, a limited-edition book of images from his beloved hometown. The book release party featured a packed-house photo exhibit at the California Surf Museum in downtown Oceanside.
In 2013, he held a photo exhibit of a group of works that featured graveyards from his travels around the world titled Flores De Los Muertos and was held at Said Space Gallery in Encinitas, California.
In addition, Aaron’s been working as a photographer and journalist for nearly 25 years, and his progressive sports and travel photography have been published in numerous magazines and brands around the world. In 2013, he served as a judge for Red Bull’s illustrious Illume photography contest.
Between working as a marketing specialist and constantly trying new photo techniques, Aaron also likes to spend his free time with his wife and daughter and practice creative outlets such as painting, drawing, and sculpting. Checkwood graduated from San Diego State with a major in history.
